The 2009 Bower Trophy draw Handicaps

Congratulations to Amotherby A who won the 2009 Bower Trophy. Report:

Bower Trophy final: Ryedale SC A 4½ Amotherby A 4½

Well, table tennis matches don't come much closer than this, and when they are the final of the league's KO competition with the top two Div 1 sides facing each other it's all the more exciting. Ryedale Sports Club's first team put out a strong line up of Dave Burnham, John Flintoft and Mike Fenby to face Amotherby A who were without Ian Stansfield who has been unbeaten in handicap games for a remarkable length of time.

Ryedale took the initiative from the off, with Mike Fenby outplaying Pat Swindell, and Dave Burnham's antispin expertise proving difficult for the opposition. Paul Young beat John Flintoft, however, as did Tom Needham, although the Pickering man picked up a set against Pat Swindell, his bogey player of times past.

With one set to play, Ryedale found themselves 4½ - 3½ ahead and needing just a draw or win to take the Bower Trophy. Up stepped the evening's only two unbeaten players: Mike Fenby and Tom Needham. Their encounter was a tremendously tight tussle, with controversial edge calls and two great battling performances but Tom came out on top, levelling the match and requiring a points countback. With the card checked several times, Amotherby A emerged as the winners, by 11 points, and so it was by the narrowest of margins that they won the league and cup double for 2009. Well done to them and commiserations to Ryedale Sports Club who put up a great fight.

Points to note

  • First round matches should be played during the week of Jan 5th.

  • Any team unable to fulfil their first round match by Jan 19th should concede the tie.

  • If your team progresses, please arrange your next match right away.

  • Scorecards should clearly be marked KO or Bower Trophy and sent to Andy Seed within 3 days of the match.

  • Matches consist of nine singles games. Each game is one set, first to 42, unless a player with a minus handicap is playing: see below for details.

  • Only players listed in the handicap list attached are eligible to play in this competition.

Scoring and rules

Matches consist of 9 singles sets. In the event of a tie (as shown below), the winner shall be the team with the highest aggregate points total.

In games between two players on a plus handicap, there is one set up to 42 points, two serves each, change ends at 21.

The score is written on the card, as below, then the handicap points added to find the winner.

In games involving a player on a minus handicap, the lowest handicap is converted to to a plus and added to 42 to determine the length of a game. Eg, if a player on -8 plays someone on +2, there will be one set to 50, change at 25.

Completed Team KO scorecard:

Game 1 here is played to 49 because Boll has a -7 handicap (42+7, see). Boll wins 42-41 after his handicap is taken off and Wang’s is added on. Game 4 is a tie at 57-57, so each team gets half a point. The match is a 4½-4½  draw, so the overall points are added up. Shanghai win by 433 to 423 (but I saw the match and Amotherby were very unlucky).
