Report: The Edens Cup – 2006

An Inter-Secondary Schools Team Competition.

An Inaugural Table Tennis Event for Ryedale

The event, devised by Gerald Cosens (Secretary and Coach of the M&NTTCG), was held at Norton College on 13th December 2006. The group sponsored a new trophy and dedicated it to Cliff Edens in commemoration of his past nine years' work and his continuing coaching and encouragement with the youth of Ryedale within the sport of table tennis.

The four major secondary schools in Ryedale (Malton, Norton, Lady Lumleys & Ryedale) competed for the trophy with each team of four players playing against each other team over the course of two hours on four tables. The eventual winners of the trophy were Ryedale School comprising of three junior county players (Edward Fambely, Finn Needham & Luke Lunn), being well supported by Joe Newton. The team dropped just one game throughout the evening to up and coming Cameron Walker who took Joe Newton to 4 games, losing out 12-14, 4-11, 11-8, 8-11.

It was fitting that Ryedale won the trophy at its inaugural event as Cliff Edens has coached the team members from the beginning of their table tennis careers. The event was played in a very sporting manner and was an excellent exhibition of table tennis.

Final placings and points were

  1. Ryedale - 9 Points
  2. Malton - 7 Points
  3. Norton - 5 Points
  4. Lady Lumleys - 3 Points

John Gascoyne, Chairman of the Ryedale Table Tennis League, presented the trophies and certificates to the players and thanks were extended to Norton College for the use of their facilities, Paul Stansfield, David Chugg & Cliff Edens for assisting. Cliff Edens extended thanks to Gerald Cosens for organising the event. Special thanks went to Stephanie Young of Norton College for her umpiring duties on the night. It is expected that the Edens Cup will become an annual event.

Wednesday 28th February 2007

Panthers Prowess Proven

Congratulations go to team Panthers: Alistair Quinn, James Stansfield and Callum Smith, as they won the junior league by 6 points from Pumas, with Lions in third. During a competitive season, each played their part. Leading for the first six weeks of the season, the Lions, who held the lead for five weeks, overtook them; Pumas then took the lead for one week before the Panthers regained the lead for the final two weeks.

Four players competed in all fourteen weeks, Cole Goodchild (average 58%), Daniel Leogue (85%), Sarah Walker (19%) and Stephanie Young (35%). Ryan Hood kept his winning form intact ending with 100% for his 12 matches.

The junior league ends with a tournament, played over two weeks, where the individual players have the opportunity to demonstrate how they have improved over the season of competition and coaching.

Both Paul Stansfield and I wish all players a great summer and look forward to seeing them again next season.

Week 13

Wednesday 21st February 2007

The Pumas fell from top place in dramatic style handing their main rivals, Panthers, a walkover in the penultimate game of the season. Panthers now have what must surely be an unassailable position; still, strange things can happen!

Daniel Leogue maintains his lead on the averages at 87%, assisted by two wins from James Douthwaite. Daniel lead his team to a 5-4 win over Lynx. The pain of a broken wrist could not stop Daniel Pratt from beating Daniel Leogue in five sets, however.

Callum Smith continues to show maturity well in advance of his age of 10. Displaying impressive stroke skill and very intelligent play, Callum is a star in the making.

Week 12

Wednesday 7th February 2007 : Pumas pounce

With just two weeks remaining of the season, Pumas have made a significant move at the top of the table, opening up a lead of 3 points over both the Lions & Panthers.  However, hope is not lost with 18 points up for grabs. Young players continue to make their mark on the league with Callum Smith continuing his winning form, and Lauren Young & Jamie Shaw also featuring this week. Tournament time is drawing near and players are reminded to ensure entry forms are submitted on time.

Week 11

Wed 31st Jan 2007: Two Teams break away

With three weeks to go, Pumas and Lions (56pts) have opened up a three point gap from Panthers (53) who are in third, with Quinn, Smith and Stansfield performing strongly of late. Jaguars are still in with a shout on 52 points, Joshua Garcia-Hall continuing his improving form. The league welcomed Becky Cook - even at this stage new players are always welcome. Seven players have 100% attendance levels, of these Dan Leogue leads the win averages on 87%.

Report

Wed 24th Jan 2007: One point covers four teams!

After the 10th week of competition just one point now separates each of the top four teams in the league, making this league surely more competitive than the Premiership! Lions are holding on to top place by one point at 51, while the Pumas, with 50, are second, one point ahead of Panthers on 49, who in turn are one point ahead of Jaguars on 48 points.

Younger members of the league are continuing to exert their influence on team positions and are benefiting from the experience of competition, with improved playing standards being exhibited across the whole of the league.

This week we are pleased to welcome another new player to the league (more are welcome and it is never too late!), Stephanie Young’s younger sister Lauren displaying the same natural ability for the sport as her older sibling. Watch for these two in future doubles partnerships!

The league's individuals tournament and presentation night are looming up and all the players are busy training and looking forward to competing in the league tournament. This is to be held over two Wednesdays (7th and 14th March). The 14th of March featuring the finals and a 'Generational' exhibition of the noble art of Table Tennis, both evenings starting at 5pm and concluding at 7.00pm.

March will be a busy month for the juniors, as they will also be competing in the Ryedale Closed Tournament at Norton College throughout the day on Saturday 10th March 2007. Please come along and support these potential young stars of tomorrow.

Ryan the lion roars again!

Yes, it is that man again. Ryan Hood continues to hold his 100% record in the Ryedale Junior League. Gaining another three points for his team this week, Stephanie Young continues her impressive form with two wins to give the Lions a three point’s lead over second placed Panthers. Three teams share 43 points; Panthers taking second place due to losing fewer games throughout the league, so far.

Oliver Grimshaw gained three valuable points for his team, beating Daniel Leogue (11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11) Oliver was well supported by young Russell Quinn with two points resulting in a 5-4 win for their team the Jackals against the Tigers.

The Panthers returned to form this week with all three players contributing to an impressive 7-2 win against the Lynx team. Alistair Quinn taking all three, with James Stansfield & Callum Smith supporting their captain by winning two each.

Report:

With school Christmas commitments, only one team managed to turn out a full team. Gareth Webb returned after his tennis coaching in York, and recorded maximum points for his team the Pumas, being well supported by Ben Holtby with maximum points, and Michael McCourtney with one point. The depleted team of Leopards managed only two points, both Cole Goodchild and Cameron Walker picking up a point each. The Lions continue to roar, taking top spot with four clear points over the three teams sharing second place. Ryan Hood retains his 100% record, well supported by the up and coming Stephanie Young, contributing two points to her team's 7-2 victory over the Tigers.

Report

The second week of the Ryedale Junior League saw the Leopards at the top ‘spot’.  The team of Cole Goodchild, Cameron Walker and Kane Axelby lead by 2 points despite losing to the Jaguars 3-6.  Cole had a close match with Jonathon Brown, coming back from two games down to level it at 2-2 but then lost the 5th 12-10.  Daniel Leogue of the Tigers also won in 5 games against star of RTTL Division 3, Oliver Grimshaw of the Jackals, but star of this match was Russell Quinn, aged 9, who won his first game in the League against James Douthwaite in a closely contested 5 game match.  Three players are still on 100% and they are Ryan Hood, Daniel Leogue and Alistair Quinn.
